Setting Out on Buying Your New Touring Caravan
When first looking to buy your touring caravan, you may have a number of questions about what you need to think about when choosing your new caravan. You may be a first time buyer or an experienced caravaner but there are a number of tips that can help you regardless of your experience.
Check Your Driving License
When looking for a new touring caravan, (as we have discussed in previous articles) you will need to check if you can tow your caravan. It’s really important to understand the limitations of your driving license before going out on a trip with caravan in tow. If you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997 then you gain the ability to automatically drive a heavier car and caravan combination in comparison to passing after this test. A standard driving license after this date covers categories B & B1. This allows you to drive a vehicle weighing up to 3,500kg (B) and tow a trailer of up to 750kg from behind your vehicle.
A lighter car can tow a heavier caravan but you must not exceed the 3,500kg limit. This is also the Maximum Authorised Mass so the actual weight of the caravan and vehicle. This is regardless of how much luggage you put inside as long as you don’t exceed the vehicle limits. You need to pass an additional driving test to add B+E category to your license which is a difficult test. Remember that if you passed before 1st January 1997 then you automatically have B+E category on your license allowing you to drive a car and caravan of a combined weight of up to 8,250kg which covers most caravans.
Matching Your Vehicle With Your New Caravan
You’ll also need to match your car with your caravan as you need to know what kind of caravan your car can tow. According to the Camping & Caravanning club, the following is a good rule of thumb when deciding whether your car can tow your caravan:
“Start by looking in the handbook to find the kerbweight of your car and multiply it by 85/100. This will give you the important ’85 per cent’ figure. Now check the towing limit for your particular model of car in the handbook. Is it higher than the 85 per cent figure? If so, you can begin to look for a caravan up to the 85 per cent limit. If not, you’ll be restricted to the lower towing limit.”

Consider Additional Options
When purchasing a used caravan, you will have to select the layout that is within the caravan. As purchasing a used caravan is a significantly less investment than purchasing one brand new, these pre-owned caravans are great for those that are starting out on their caravanning adventures. Although the layouts are pre-determined, you can still choose a layout that suits you and there are a number of additional accessories that can help you enjoy your new caravan. Awnings for example are a fantastic additional feature which can really increase the amount of space that you have within your caravan. These awnings are very spacious, you’re able to add tables, additional chairs, a pet area or maybe even a storage area for muddy clothes. It’s perfect for families and offers you a number of additional features with your caravan. In addition to this, if you need the extra storage space then take a look around the caravan to see if there are enough lockers available for your requirements.
Selecting the Right Touring Caravan
As you have a number of legal requirements (tow limit, driving license restrictions etc.) you will not be able to select certain caravans if you do not have the driving license or suitable car to tow your caravan. The largest caravans require four wheels to bear their fully laden weight with most being perfectly happy with one axle. Two tyres on each side of the caravan gives better grip and stability in theory but at the cost of manoeuvrability and you might find it difficult to tow a twin axle caravan if you are aren’t highly experienced. When deciding on the layout, consider how many will be coming with you during a caravan holiday. This includes children and friends who may accompany you during your holiday. You can also use an awning as an alternative to additional bedrooms as you can easily set these up as sleeping areas. This also negates the need to have a bigger caravan and towing car as you won’t need as many sleeping areas. The kitchen area is also highly important as you will need to consider the cooking requirements that you will have in your caravan. If you are going to be cooking more complex meals then you will need a more equipped cooking area for example.
